For Some, Sex Is Better Sleep Aid Than Pill, Small Survey Finds

A recent survey suggests that bedtime sex may be as effective as taking a sleeping pill for some people. Conducted via social media by Dr. Douglas Kirsch from Atrium Health and Dr. Seema Khosla from the North Dakota Center for Sleep, the survey found that 75% of the 53 respondents reported sleeping better after sex or orgasm, with or without a partner. Interestingly, among those who use sleep medications, nearly two-thirds said sex or orgasm helped them sleep as well as, or even better than, their usual sleep aids. While these findings, presented at the annual SLEEP meeting, point to a potential non-pharmacological method for improving sleep, Kirsch emphasizes that the results are preliminary and more research is needed. The survey also highlighted that sex might not be beneficial for everyone, particularly those with a history of sexual trauma, underscoring the need for further exploration into this often-overlooked aspect of sleep medicine.
